Wonderful photography of Christmas all around the world. The word for Christmas in deferred Old British is Cristes Maesse, the Huge of Jesus, first discovered in 1038, and Cristes-messe, in 1131. In Nederlander it is Kerstmis, in Latina Passes away Natalis, whence comes the France Noël, and French Il natale; in In german Weihnachtsfest, from the preceeding holy vigil. The phrase Yule is of questioned source. It is unconnected with any phrase significance “wheel”. The name in Anglo-Saxon was geol, feast: geola, the name of monthly (cf. Icelandic iol a food in December).

Christmas was not among the first celebrations of the Cathedral. Irenaeus and Tertullian bypass it from their details of feasts; Origen, looking perhaps at the discreditable imperial Natalia, claims (in Lev. Hom. viii in Migne, P.G., XII, 495) that in the Scriptures sinners alone, not team, enjoy their birthday; Arnobius (VII, 32 in P.L., V, 1264) can still make fun of the “birthdays” of the gods.
